Chapter Seven

Okay, Lucas was all for everyone getting along, but this was just ridiculous.

His brothers loved Dean. Especially Harold, who had hated every wolf he’d ever met. Even, Lucas was pretty sure, himself.

After Lucas had gotten to the door and been properly swept up in a brotherly group hug, he’d only had enough time to say, “Dean, this is Chris, Harold, and Brandon,” before the three of them had Dean tackled in an alpha free for all.

That’s when the wrestling started.

Lucas had considered getting involved, even made a step toward then, when his dad shot him that look. The look that he’d been getting since he was seven years old and broke his arm after trying to play rough with his brothers.

So, with a sigh, he opted to take a seat on the porch steps instead. Dean, at least, looked like he was having a good time. They were all grunting, swiping and kicking at each other but keeping it civil in their human form, and there was a smile on Dean’s face that Lucas had never seen before.

Then, before he could really make sense of anything, it was over. His brothers were standing up, helping one another to their feet, and Chris, the oldest, was extending a hand to Dean. The blonde wolf accepted it, and the two walked side by side back to the porch. Lucas rose to meet them, a little unsure of what to do or say. Luckily, Chris had always been good at reading him, and he lightly punched him in the shoulder with a laugh.

“Lucas!” he said, stepping onto the porch beside him. He towered over Lucas, taller than Dean but only by an inch or so. “You didn’t say you were bringing an alpha home. But I guess I’m not surprised,” he laughed, and Lucas could feel a pit forming in his stomach. “You grew up with three alphas – of course that’s who you would make friends with.”

“Oh,” Lucas said, relieved. “Yeah. I guess.”

As Harold and Brandon came up behind them, the five of them walked back into the house, their father already back in the kitchen with their mother. Before Lucas could take a seat at the table beside him, Brandon slammed a box down on the table. “Ta-da! Welcome home, little bro!” he said happily, flipping the lid back.

A cake, round and covered in brown frosting, read, “Congrats on Passing” in yellow candy letters. The smell of chocolate wafted up to Lucas, and he could feel himself salivating at the scent.

“Thanks, guy,” Lucas licked his lips. “This is awesome!”

“Oh, plates! Let me grab some…” she muttered, dashing to the cabinets by the stove. As she pulled them down on the other side of the room, Lucas heard Harold whispering to Dean.

“Mom can’t bake to save her life,” he said. “It’s not much of a problem, really, cause Lucas is the only one in the family with a sweet tooth. But when he comes home—”

“Here we are,” his mother said, setting a plate down in front of everyone.
